According to the Global Out of School Initiative (OOSCI) Kenya Report, 2021, an estimated 2.5million children are out of school due to social, cultural, and economic barriers. Out of these, findings show that about 1.13 million children are of primary school age (6 to 13 years old). The situation has worsened due to the impact of COVID-19 related school closures, followed by drought in many of the Arid and Semi-Arid Counties.
LISP has partnered with UNICEF and the ministry of education to implement a project dubbed “Operation come back to school.” The project is being implemented in Turkana, Isiolo and Nairobi counties. The goal of this project is to enhance equitable access to quality and inclusive basic education services and learning opportunities for 19,044 children aged 6-13 years for a period of 2 years in the targeted counties.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, TSC, Directorate of Children Services, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government and other likeminded stakeholders, LISP is striving to achieve this goal through the following strategies:
