Dennis was a beneficiary of the Watoto Tusome Project, an initiative by UNICEF and Life Skills Promoters whose primary objective was to enrol underprivileged and out of school children back to school. The class three pupil an only child, was forced to grow up faster than his age mates taking care of his mother who lives with a disability. This hindered his early academic life as he had to help his father take care of her.“Many parents in the area do not value education at all. They keep their children at home. Others think it is better for their children to work in the nearby slaughter houses and make extra money.”said the head teacher who takes pride in retaining children in school. He also added “It is hard keeping these young children in school because they lack enough food at home which affects their attention span in class. However, we have a feeding programme and provide food for them during the weekends, for those who are very vulnerable like Dennis because it is not certain that he will get food in the evening or over the weekend,”
