Reading Enhancing Confidence

Raising Star Academy is a small school located at the boundary of Mathare and Ruaraka area. The school has an approximate population of five hundred pupils. This number has risen over the years as the school which began as a preschool now includes a primary unit as well. Raising Star has also grown from offering education up to standard seven to now going up to standard eight with its first candidates going to sit their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations next year. The school is amongst the smallest in the project but yet strives to better its child-friendly initiatives which are achieved by the help of an active board of management committee that aids the director in running the school.

Under the GOAL project, Lifeskills promoters introduced reading clubs in the various schools that they work with and Raising Star was one of the schools that benefited. Story books were provided to the school and children allowed to read during free lessons.

As a result of the reading club, the reading culture in this school has improved compared to previous years. Pupils have developed an interest in reading and this has enhanced their reading and writing skills as well as boosted the pupils’ confidence. During our daily monitoring, we came across a child who has profited from the reading club.
