Meet Seth Momanyi an eight-year-old who lives in Mathare area one, first born of two boys and attends Raising Star Academy in standard three. Seth was a shy child and lacked confidence before the introduction of the reading club. He was withdrawn; shying from expressing himself or participating in class which in turn affected his performance. “I did not talk in class because I could not speak good English. My friends laughed at me when I was told by a teacher to read from the book or on the blackboard and it made me feel bad,” Seth explained. He added that his mother was worried and thought that he did not like school. This tormented Seth as his peers boldly read in class while he watched and wished he could read like them. “Every day I wished school time would go faster so I could go home and play,” he concluded.
